Having not used Photo Mechanic for a number of years, and having problems with Photoshop CS4 and Bridge CS4 running on an aging Apple Powerbook G4 Aluminium 1 Ghz laptop with 2 gig of RAM I though that I would take a step backwards in time and use an old version of Photoshop and Photo Mechanic rather than the rather hardware intensive CS.

It is a shame as I really like the way that CS 4 works on my G5 Desktop Machine, but waiting for the it to read the file from the hard disk is unbearable. Whereas I used to be one of the fastest movers of images from the camera to  the picture desk a combination of bigger file sizes and more and more memory hungry applications now means that I struggle.

Anyway the upshot of this is that I am now using Photo Mechanic, and as with many applications it appears to have become bloatware also.  not quite to the  extent that others are but, it has grown, in size and functionality.

Whilst I have to use it in anger yet, first impressions are that it looks quite similar to the old version that I  had some 6 years ago, there are a couple of minor tweeks that I can see, the interfaces is slightly slicker.

Now all I have to do is re-work my post capture image processing technique to take advantage of any of the new features that Photo Mechanic offers, It at first glance doesn't have a huge amount more than Adobe Bridge CS3 and some of it is less intuitive, however I am hoping that it will build contact sheets and previews rather more quickly and enable PS CS4 to get on with it's job rather more quickly.
